Behind the Scenes: Teaching a Custom Fragrance Experience at Expressive Aromas
Most people come to Expressive Aromas expecting a fun, creative activity. And it is that. But for me, as someone who teaches these workshops, it’s also so much more.
Every experience is a different mix of personalities, stories, and scent journeys. It’s a front-row seat to people making something personal, and truly unique to them.
Setting the Stage
Before anyone walks through the door, we’ve already set the mood. Scent stations are prepped, bottles are lined up, the playlist is on, and the studio smells incredible. We want guests to feel like they’re stepping into an experience the second they arrive, not just another class or activity, but something more immersive.
Connecting Through Scent
My favorite part of leading the class is connecting with guests and hearing their fragrance backstories. Some people come in with a specific goal, like recreating a scent they’ve worn for years. Others want to try something completely outside their comfort zone. And some are just beginning to explore the world of fragrance. No matter where they’re starting from, I love helping them find a direction and guiding them through the process.
Every Group Is a Little Different
No two groups feel the same. Some groups are focused and quiet, others are chatty and playful. The questions vary, the energy shifts, and that’s part of what keeps it interesting. I’ve seen groups of friends, couples, coworkers, and entire families come through, each with their own vibe, each leaving with something uniquely theirs.
Watching People Make Memories
Hands down, the most rewarding part of teaching these workshops is seeing people create memories together. There’s something about playing with scent that gets people talking, laughing, and opening up. Maybe it’s because smell is tied so closely to memory. Or maybe it’s just because it’s fun. Either way, by the time we’re blending and naming custom fragrances, there’s always a sense of joy in the room.
Creating a Space for Creativity
At the end of the day, I want guests to feel welcome, safe, and inspired. Whether they’re crafting a bold new signature scent or quietly figuring out what they like, I’m there to help guide the process, but I want them to take ownership of their creation. It’s theirs. It should feel like them.
Teaching these classes never gets old. It’s creative, it’s personal, and it’s rooted in connection. And honestly? It smells really good too.
